7th meeting in Hamburg

The 7 th meeting took place in Hamburg from 16th to 18th June 2011

In the last meeting the check and correction of the final version of the Compendium of cultural and peer-learning approaches was carried out. Furthermore the concept for a hand-out on cultural and peer-learning approaches was discussed and agreed on.

Formalities and communication were managed with a final controlling of work programme, a controlling of mobilities and confirmations for partners participation.

Regarding PR and dissemination activities the update of presentation at weblog and partner websites was agreed on and the transfer measures of the partner organisations were reflected.

The final evaluation table was carried out and the evaluation report was discussed and agreed on.

6th meeting in Ljubljana

The partners start with a checking and adoption of the agenda. There are no objections to the topics included for discussion so the participants in the meeting commence with their work.

The first task is the work on the compendium.

The partners go through the compendium.

It is agreed that a paragraph giving some brief details on the project, its history and how the whole partnership was established should be included in the Foreword section. Zori is about to do the integration of this paragraph.

The partners continue with a discussion on the depth and broadness of the definition of cultural peer learning.

The partners decide that some further efforts may be put into the case studies section in order to make it clearer, if and where necessary, how the latter are connected with cultural peer learning.

The partners decide to bring some further clarification and reorganize also the Peer learning section of the compendium. Some changes in the lay out and structure of the compendium are adopted.

The partners decide to have a Conclusions section, which should not only rephrase the benefits of cultural and peer learning approaches but add further partners’ insight into the project and its outcomes.

The conclusions section will incorporate the experiences of the partners during the project as well as selection of comments from end-beneficiaries of practically implemented cultural and peer learning approaches.

The partners decide to draw up proposals for inclusion in the Conclusions section, which should be sent to Nastja by 30 April 2011 in order to be put together by 15 May 2011.

The partners also discuss the structure of the case studies and end up with a conclusion that it can go through very minor adaptation and that its lay out may a change a little, but that it otherwise gives an opportunity for information to be presented in an organized and consistent for all case studies manner.

The partners decide that the Background section of the case studies should be moved in the beginning together with Description.

With regard to the layout of the present compendium the partners decide that the Index should be linked with all the chapters and that all cases should be included in the Index and therefore quickly accessible through links again.

The compendium should also include the EU disclaimer.

In order for the layout of the compendium to be finalized all partners decide to send to Erika photos from case studies presented in order for the latter to be included for visualization in the compendium. This should be done by 30 April 2011.

Part 3 of the compendium, which covers all peer learning dedicated topics should be finalized by the end of April 2011.

The finalized compendium content (except for the Conclusions part, which she should put up together again anyway) should be sent to Nastja for proofreading till end of April 2011.

Nastja proofreads and finalizes Conclusions till mid May.

The partners continue with a discussion on the forthcoming final report elaboration. Ulrich proposes to prepare the final report two weeks before the meeting in Hamburg so that it can be discussed and augmented there if necessary.

The partners confirm the dates for meeting in Hamburg – 15-18 June 2011.

In order for hotel booking and further planning to be done Ralf should send out a registration form by email to all partners in order for all attendees to register themselves.

The partners decide to have one more flashmeeting on 9 May 2011 at 10am. Zori should provide the link to the book meeting room by email by 21 April 2011.

The partners confirm their readiness to update their web pages with news on the project.

The same goes for the dedicated project blog.

The partners decide also to check and fill in all evaluation questionnaires, which are still pending so that a final internal evaluation is developed after the final meeting in Hamburg.

Thursday, 27^th January 2011

After the welcome word, the partners discuss the background of Cultural peer learning approaches in their respective countries.

There is a strong emphasize on the use of Cultural and peer learning as a technique of KinderKulturKaravane and related groups on one hand, and a question of financial sustainability of such a robust experience on the other hand.

During the talks it becomes obvious there are basically two groups of experiences, Western KinderKulturKaravane approaches and Eastern broader speaking cultural exchanges experiences. There has not been any KKK related experience implemented in the East yet; that is what makes it particularly appealing for the future.

KKK cultural exchange is a very complex event in many ways; it combines an informal education approach within the performance and the workshops for the pupils whilst establish a ground for various unpredictable informal experiences during the workshop and beyond, while the children stay with the hosting families. In this regard, the KKK aproach is revealing and enriching in many directions.

The Eastern partners explain the circumstances in the East: KKK experience being very demanding in terms of finances and organisation, there is a need for some forms of simplification and availability of such experience for local teachers, who might otherwise be not able to multiply it. The question rises whether KKK approach is transferable between any differentiated cultural groups or there is loss of some crucial elements in the process.

Alena and Anita argue that the financial point of view will eventually force the teachers to adjust to lower-cost (and maybe less interesting) activities that should be developped.

Day 2 – Friday 28^th January 2011

The partners discuss the possibilities how to fully explore the potential of CPL. Is there any space for the multiplication amongst local teachers? The discussion continues over the opportunities and expectations of all the countries involved.

One of the interesting ideas that arose during the debate is the direct involvment of the teachers into the workshop so they have first-hand experience. In theory it might help teachers to understand what kind of processes happen during the cultural exchange what might boost their interest into this educational approach.

The partners schedule next online meetings, next meetings in Ljubljana and Hamburg and set the preliminary agenda for Ljubljana, where the compendium ist to be finalized.

The partners discuss the idea of peer learning

- What can the peer learning approach offer to the educational system.

- Target group – peer learning for managers/leaders/directors of youth groups.

- General framework for distributing knowledge to other peer learners.

- Intercultural competences and social competences of young adult learners.

- The cultural approach being a key for peer learning.

The partners continue with evaluation of the experiences of the KinderKulturKarawane groups.

At 11.00 arrives Grupo YAURI from Bolivia for an evaluation workshop with the partners.

Bettina makes a presentation on the Grundtvig Partnership project. She explains what peer learning is and makes comparisons between the work of the partners and what the youths from the group are doing when they perform before their peers. She expresses the partners need to understand more about the experiences of YAURI in the workshops and the performances.

The partners present themselves – organization, activities, country, etc.

The group members also introduce themselves.

The YAURI group presents some background information on the project. 20 years ago several street children who started with a theatre project. Now a cultural centre for young people is set up. This is an initiative of the youths, the youth leaders. Young people directing their efforts to other young people (= peer learning). They work with theatre, music, dance, circus, plastic arts. The centre is settled in a marginalized neighbourhood and the members of YAURI want to bring all their talents to the youths/kids in this neighbourhood. They want to explore the body in order to empower their peers to become able to express themselves in any kind of situation or setting – this is why they use theatre, circus, etc. In Latin America the youths are not given much importance when art and culture is in question. The government does not give it enough importance, on the contrary.

A discussion on experiences and expectations follows.

After lunch break the partners continue with an evaluation meeting with the YES Theatre.

The children who act in the theatre present themselves (three 13 years old boys and one 16 years old boy).The teachers and guide also present themselves.

A discussion about the experiences of the YES Theatre follows, as well as some briefing on Palestinian reality and problems.

After fixing the dates for the next virtual (3 December 2010, 10am DE time) and real meetings (Bratislava. 27-28 January 2011, Ljubljana – 6-8 April 2011, Hamburg– 15 – 18 June 2011) the partners join a performance and discussion with Yauri in Cult Café, a youth center with mostly young people with migrant background.

18 October 2010

The partners attend a YAURI workshop with school children at Dschungel.

The partners make a resume of the YAURI workshop. All partners are quite happy with their workshop. They liked the fact that the Yauri group had a methodology, they had a plan of what and how they should do. Luis - the young person leading the workshop - was flexible enough to change the exercises when he saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere with a certain activity.

Prior to the start of the partnership meeting the partners attended an evening performance of “Baobab culture troupe” at the Arkadas theatre in Cologne.

Friday, 01.10.2010

Agenda of the meeting has been presented by Ulrich.

The partners attended a performance of Baobab culture troupe at a Cologne school for children between 6 and 10 years of age. After the performance the members of the troupe organized workshops for the children and involved them in activities corresponding to their age.

After a lunch at university menza the partners return to the meeting place and continue their work on the case studies.

VIDC, Büro für Kultur und Medienprojekte, Ekvilib Institute and FDCBPCS activities and case studies were discussed.

The partners decided that the case studies are going to form just one of the section of a compendium, which is going to be developed as a final product under the project.

The sections of this compendium were agreed to be as follows:

definition of peer learning,
project background
why cultural peer learning is necessary
case studies
why is peer learning important for youths, why should we do it in the cultural way and how to use it for social inclusion

The partners discussed the agenda for the meeting in Vienna and in particular the joint events with the two groups – Yes and Yauri.

Then the partners continue with a brief discussion of the calendar with regard to the meetings in Bratislava, Ljubljana and Hamburg. The meeting in Bratislava is proposed to be moved to mid March 2011, the meeting in Ljubljana – to mid April 2011 and the last one in Hamburg is scheduled for June 2011.

The partners are then joined by representatives of the Baobab culture troupe and conduct an evaluation meeting with them. Special focus was on the young artist's experiences on peer learning.

After the lunch break, at which was served African food, the group was joined by the representatives of the Peer leader international initiative, which is taking place in Germany, South Africa and Brazil. The three girls present their experiences and their project idea as well as the background of the project.

On 12-13 April 2010 in Sofia, Bulgaria took place the second meeting under the “Cultural and peer-learning approaches to integrate socio-economically disadvantaged youth and young adults with an immigrant background” project /project number LLP-2009-GRU-LP-14/ in hotel “Legends”. During the two days of work the partners discussed and took decisions about the following matters: • Framework for cultural and peer-learning approaches – examples to use the pattern for identification and presentation of good practices. The partners get into a profound discussion of each others good practices and share valuable information for the development of the compendium under the present project and future joint applications of the consortium.
• Analyses of questionnaires for qualitative evaluation – the partners consider the internal project evaluation very important and shall fill in and provide evaluation questionnaires after each project meeting.
• Update of presentation at weblog and partner websites – the project blog and all partners’ web-sites will be updated according to the decisions taken during the Sofia meeting. All partners will exchange photos and information for publishing.
• Planning of meeting in Cologne – the partners agree to arrive on Sept 30 and have the meeting on 1-2 October 2010 - work and group meetings.
• Planning of evaluation workshop in Vienna - 16-19 October 2010. The partners agree to work on Sunday (since morning) and continue on Monday from morning and probably have lunch with a visiting group. The partners decide to go to a Sunday performance at 8 o’clock so that people can leave on Monday evening if necessary.
• Dates for next online meetings are confirmed
• Update of work plan and time table – there are no changes to the work plan and time table except probably the moving of the Cologne meeting to October 2010, when it will coincide with a visit of a group from the South.

Ralf Classen and Bettina Kocher introduce KinderKulturKarawane (Children's Cultural Caravan, CCC): Since 10 years cultural youth groups from Africa, Asia and Latin America visit Europe (up to now Germany, Denmark and Austria). The kids (between 12 and 20 years old) have in common, that they live in very underprivileged circumstances and that culture is a way to them to find new life perspectives and to build up new self-confidence. Cultural performances in European schools, theatres, cultural and youth centres create a space for deep exchange between kids of different cultures. Cultural approaches and peer-learning are more and more accepted pedagogical methods especially in informal education. The intention of this learning partnership is to exchange experience of the cultural and peer-learning approaches for integration of socio-economically disadvantaged youth.

Institute equalita offers training and consulting for ecological organisations and social institutions. It is running educational activities, qualification projects, consulting, seminars, and other activities in numerous areas and countries in Europe. One focus are educational measures on North-South topics and Global Learning. Institut equalita is carrying out the action Children's Culture Caravan together with Büro für Kultur- und Medienprojekte since the year 2000. Furthermore it has implemented cultural approaches for integration in cooperation with youth centres in Köln and the youth department of North Rhine-Westphalia (LVR). By music and theatre projects socio-economically disadvantaged youth and young adults with migrant background have been motivated to deal with their social situation and think about ways and possibilities to change it. www.equalita.de

International cultural exchange and creating an inovative fusion between culture and global learning are in the focus of the work of the Office for Culture and Media Projects. Since 10 years the Children's Cultural Caravan is one of our ambitious projects. Young people from Africa, Asia and Latin American countries, living under extremely poor conditions, got new access to creating their future by cultural expressions. With theatre plays, circus, music and dance, they impress young people of the same age in Germany and other European countries with their creativity and artistic power. The experiences with cultural approaches and peer-learning in global education for sustainable development we made in theas years with 5-7 groups of young artists from around the world are the background of this Grundtvig learning partnership to be developed further on an European level. The children's Cultural Caravan is among others "Official Project of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Develpoment" in Germany and official project of the action plan "Hamburg learns sustainability".
The role of media on north-south issues for educational purposes is part of the work of the Television Workshop Development Politics, a working group of organisations engaged in education, development politics and media. We are managing the screening days and discussion which take place regularly. The combination of global learning and new media becomes more and more important. As spokesman of the German based One World Internet Conference we react on this challenge. The data base One World Media that we edit provides access to media on north-south issues and promotes their use in education.

Civic association People against racism was founded with the goal of strengthening a tolerant, multicultural society, which respects human rights and the individuality of every person regardless of their sex, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, age or education.
Our main goal is to root out prejudices, through a systematic education of society. The education is mainly directed through trainings and workshops focusing on the issues of racism, totalitarian political systems, discrimination, tolerance, interculturalism and multiculturalism. Our organization - “Foundation for Development of the Cultural and Business Potential of Civil Society”, Sofia - aims at supporting the educational, cultural and economic development of the civil society in Bulgaria and to stimulate intercultural and artistic exchange of experience, skills and ideas. SPOR Media is an association working with a broad range of activities within media and culture: Production and distribution of documentaries; Production af educational packages combining films and website material; Promotion of South-North cultural exchange and dialogue between young people; Support of media projects in the South.

SPOR Media has special focus upon the human potentials and the cultural richness of individuals and societies in the South, and the necessity of global equality and cultural exchange - in accordance with Unescos convention concerning the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

For thirty years SPOR Media's main activity has been to produce or import documentaries, mainly about issues from the South, for non-commercial distribution in Denmark. In connection to the films, SPOR Media has produced educational materials which can be downloaded from the internet. (www.fjernenaboer.dk)

During the last five years SPOR Media, in collaboration with Children's Culture Caravan in Germany, has organised visits by cultural groups from Bolivia, Afghanistan and South Africa to the municipality of Kalundborg, which is located in a rural area of Denmark. The groups participated in workshops at the local primary schools and gave several public performances. The visits have been a big success and have given a significant cultural input to the youngsters, which have had very little contact to other cultures of the world, especially in the South.

"Our organisation VIDC (Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation) was founded in the early 1960s by Bruno Kreisky and Nehru to facilitate the cooperation between countries of the West and the South on an equal level. Today we have three departments: moving cultures with a focus on art and culture from Africa, Asia and Latin America, FairPlay with anti-racism activities in sports and a development policy department researching on development issues. My personal focus is on intercultural projects with artists from the South in order to give Austrians a possibility of concrete and positive experience with people from a different cultural background."

Cultural approaches and peer-learning are more and more accepted pedagogical methods especially in informal education. An excellent and successful example is the project KinderKulturKarawane - Children's Culture Caravan. Socio-economically disadvantaged young people at the age of 16-25 from Africa, Asia and Latin America present cultural performances like music, dance, theatre, and circus for European youth, young adults and other audience to deliver insight into their everyday life and their visions for a better future, but also to show chances for social integration by these activities.

Young adults in Europe discover by these presentations, workshops and direct meetings with the young artists - peer-learning - parallels to their own, often precarious social and economic situation. And they get to know innovative and creative perspectives and strategies to foster social integration.

The cultural, rather than purely cognitive approach in combination with peer-learning transfers very direct political and social integration problems and possible solutions, and gives concrete experiences regarding the importance of socio-cultural exchanges. Also in the new EU member states there are first initiatives and concepts fostering such approaches, focussing on integration and socio-economic deprivation in their own country as well as on the global dimensions of social disintegration.

The intention of this learning partnership is to exchange experience of the cultural and peer-learning approaches by the participating organisations and their staff. An evaluation and development of methods should lead to a comprehensive approach for further activities and a European network working with this educational approach for social integration. Especially the partners in the new EC member countries will be supported to adapt and implement the approaches and to integrate in the European networking.

Target groups are educational institutions and their staff members and teachers, especially working with disadvantaged young people and young adults with migrant backgrounds, using these methodological approaches in their educational activities. Further target groups are young people at the age from 16 to 24 who are not in school or vocational education, especially socio-economically disadvantaged youth and young people with migration background. Directly involved are also young cultural groups from projects participating in Children’s Culture Caravan to give a vivid impression of what their creativity can contribute to methodological innovation and to share their experiences with cultural peer-learning.
